Spiritual Direction
Spiritual direction is the ancient practice of being a mentor. Most religious traditions have
some form of mentoring relationships, and these mentors have many names: Discipler,
guru, director, spiritual friend, and others. Different directors use different models, but
the point is the same: Someone with experience in living in his or her faith tradition
provides teaching, leadership, and support to another.
Spiritual direction is not psychotherapy, although emotions, relationships, and personal
history are often the subjects of conversation.
Spiritual direction is not a substitute for self-management, although the director might at
times offer some strong recommendations.
The director helps the other person explore his or her own path, while providing insight
based on other (perhaps greater) knowledge or experience.
We both have years of experience in this area, as directors and as the directed.
