Independent Childbirth
Trish is a co-founder of Independent Childbirth, which focuses on ways to provide independent information
about pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing to women and childbirth educators We hope women will own their own
decisions - not just comply with their care provider's directions, but choose from all the options, based on the
evidence. Here is a link to the commercial independent Childbirth site.
If you are exploring options for childbirth, either your own or another's, feel free to contact us.

Midwifery
Not many people know that a planned home birth with a
trained Midwife is at least as safe as a hospital birth, and
perhaps safer, for 85-95% of women.
It is a better experience for most families in at least three
ways:
- The women have control of a natural function of
their bodies,
- Mothers and babies have improved success of
breastfeeding (which makes for smarter, healthier
babies and faster recovery for Mom)
- The mother has less pain and distress during the
post-natal period.
MOMS
MOMS is Midwives on Missions of Service. MOMS' goal is to
improve maternal/infant health and maternity outcomes for women
who wouldn't otherwise have access to care.
MOMS uses education and service to achieve this mission. Chris
is the President of the Board of Directors, and Trish is a volunteer.
Because Midwives are the preferred provider of maternity and
well-woman care around the world, MOMS activities are aligned
with the UN Millennium Development Goals. MDGs 4 and 5 call
for improvement of maternal and infant health.
MOMS is working with the leadership in Sierra Leone to create
training programs for birth attendants. Sierra Leone has the
worst maternal mortality rates in the entire world. Trish, Chris,
and Sudy Storm (founder of MOMS) visited the Eastern Province
to begin a needs assessment, and are continuing to work on
creating these programs.
MOMS also provides a clinic for low-income women in Ashland,
OR.
For more information see MOMS website.
A Doula is a person trained to support a woman in labor, freeing the partner to be a partner
and not have to be a "coach". Studies show that births with Doulas are quicker, less painful,
and have fewer interventions.
Trish is a Midwife intern, having completed her academic studies at the International School of
Traditional Midwifery. She has been gathering clinical experience to complete her internship.
She works as a doula and provides childbirth education services in the San Francisco Bay
Area. She is a member of the California Association of Midwives and Midwives Alliance of
North America.
